So…. Schools are Closed, What Does That Mean Now for NIU Staff?

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update
March 13, 2020
K-12 school closures throughout Illinois
Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

Gov. Pritzker announced today that all K-12 schools throughout Illinois will be closed beginning Tuesday, March 17 and will resume Monday, March 30. I appreciate how difficult a decision like this is to make, and I certainly understand the many implications this will have for our community.

Now comes the challenging work to determine the appropriate actions NIU will take next. Our goal is to meet the needs of our students, faculty and staff who have responsibilities for children in these schools, as well as respect those who do not. Senior leaders are thoughtfully working through possible solutions, and we will provide an update to our community tomorrow with next steps.

Please know I am impressed and buoyed by the way you are all coming together, supporting each other, demonstrating flexibility and helping our university navigate this new reality. Our shared goal is to continue to provide our students and community with the services and resources they need to complete this semester, to support critical research and to fulfill engagement obligations and, in the end, emerge from this situation as a stronger institution.

More information will follow.

Thank you,

Lisa C. Freeman
